A pathway to Higher Education with the University of Cumbria

At CACHE, we want to ensure that our learners have access to a wide range of progression routes in childcare, education and health and social care. That is why we have been working with University of Cumbria on a mapping exercise, which shows that our qualifications prepare learners with the core knowledge needed to progress on to relevant degree programmes with confidence.

Speaking about the outcome of the exercise, Dr Kaz Stuart, Associate Professor and Principal Lecturer in Health Psychology and Social Studies at University of Cumbria, commented:

“Our results show that CACHE qualifications cover the right foundational knowledge needed to provide learners with access to higher education studies”

“Just as importantly, they also show a commitment to achieving social change in the early years, education, youth work and social work sectors through education”

Our Level 3 study programmes require learners to develop into independent, reflective learners who are able to show a critical awareness of their own learning. This means that as well as mastering theoretical knowledge in their subject, learners are challenged to apply their skills to familiar and unfamiliar situations using relevant theories and research, preparing them for a range of theoretical and applied assessments at degree level.

According to  Dr Stuart, as well as providing a strong foundational knowledge for students considering higher education, the combination of theoretical knowledge and practical experience gained through CACHE Level 3 Diploma qualifications is “critical” to learners’ success on applied courses at degree level. It is also one of the primary reasons that applications from those with CACHE qualifications are welcomed by the university:

“CACHE qualifications provide particularly good preparation for learners looking to study at university. The combination of theory and practical work means students are able to apply relevant knowledge to their day to day work”

The university’s qualifications in children, young people and families, education, youth work and social care are designed so that learners can join at either Level 3 and undertake an integrated foundation degree, or at Level 4 for a BA Honours degree. Those with enough qualifications and experience are also able to complete a BA in a single year of study as a top up student.

A range of entry and exit points also give students the flexibility to exit with a foundation degree, a certificate or diploma of higher education, a full degree or an honours degree, depending on credits gained throughout study.
