Supporting Teaching and Learning

We offer qualifications from Level 1 to Level 4. The qualifications at level 1 are knowledge only and serve as an introduction to the sector; the qualifications at Levels 2 and 3 incorporate knowledge and skills and are designed for people who are already working in a position that supports learning in schools, colleges or in the community. The Level 4 qualification offers continuing professional development (CPD) for practitioners working in the school and college workforce.

Please see here for an overview of our new suite of Supporting Teaching and Learning qualifications.

Supporting learning either in schools, colleges, universities or in the community is not just about working in the classroom. The traditional role of a Teaching Assistant has become increasingly varied and now there are many different positions and jobs available in an education setting.

Perhaps you would like to work alongside a teacher in a primary or secondary school. You might wish to support a child or young person who has special educational needs. You might have considered working in a school in an administrative, technical or other support role rather than directly supporting children in the classroom.

If any of these areas appeal to you then these are the qualifications you need to consider taking. They are designed to provide all support workers in education environments with the skills and knowledge that everyone who works in the sector is expected to have.

So what job roles does that include?

  • Teaching Assistants
  • Learning Support Assistants
  • Special Educational Needs Assistants
  • Cover Supervisors
  • Midday Supervisors
  • Technical Support Staff
  • Administration Workers in Schools

Government reforms to the apprenticeship system has led to the development of the Level 3 Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship Standard. With a shift towards an employer led learner assessment, the Apprenticeship Standard focuses on End Point Assessment (EPA) with no requirement for a qualification to be a part of the Apprenticeship Standard. To support the learning of the apprentice, we offer the Level 3 Diploma in Supporting Teaching and Learning qualification which fully maps to the knowledge, skills and behaviour requirements of the Level 3 Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship Standard. While only the Diploma fully maps to the Level 3 Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship Standard, the Level 3 Supporting Teaching and Learning qualifications at the Award and Certificate sizes also provide quality and rigour to the learning of an apprentice planning on working in a more senior support role, or who will be working without supervision in education settings. We have created a mapping document to demonstrate how the qualifications map to the Apprenticeship Standard.
